Fay Ray and Daniel Gibson featured in "Mythopoetics: Symbols and Stories" at the Palm Springs Art Museum

June 11 – October 16, 2023

This exhibition highlights the work of artists in the Southern California inland region whose work incorporates mythologies, iconographies, and cultural codes. These artists rework historical and contemporary symbols and narratives to create new visual imaginings.

Featuring ten artists working in diverse mediums, including photography, painting, and sculpture, the artworks in this exhibition draw attention to the multiplicity of powerful stories that permeate the region.

Taken together, these artists prompt viewers to ask: how do stories from the past actively shape the present? How might the creation of new mythologies impact the development of future events? Through a critical engagement with myths and customs, these works prompt new considerations of what's possible.

Mythopoetics: Symbols and Stories is curated by Luisa Heredia, Chief Education and Community Engagement Officer, and Sharrissa Iqbal, Associate Curator, Modern & Contemporary Art.
