Expo Chicago: Genevieve Gaignard

Navy Pier in Festival Hall | Chicago, IL, 13 - 17 September 2017
Booth 152

Shulamit Nazarian is pleased to present a solo installation of new photography and sculpture by Los Angeles-based Genevieve Gaignard.

For EXPO Chicago, Gaignard builds upon her practice of embodied character studies, concentrating on assemblage and photography as she considers evolving intersections between gender and race. In these works, the artist amplifies, exposes, and satirizes the deeply held stereotypes that permeate the Black experience. Riffing on modes of femininity, drag, and performance, Gaignard’s installation for EXPO Chicago punctuates the white walls of the booth with a new vision for self-portraiture seen through the eyes of others.

EXPO Chicago: EXPOSURE is curated by Justine Ludwig, Director of Exhibitions and Senior Curator at Dallas Contemporary. Gaignard is also one of twelve artists featured in EXPO Chicago’s OVERRIDE billboard project. Displayed throughout Chicago, the citywide exhibition will run from August 28–September 17, 2017.
