Greg Ito Biography

Los Angeles-based Greg Ito presents pared down, graphic vignettes that cultivate a sensation of tension through composition and color. With three or four small scenes rendered within a single canvas, Ito’s storyboards ominously collapse the past, present, and future. The result is a distorted narrative unhinged from the natural sequence of time. Taking cues from illustrated children’s books and aircraft safety cards, Ito’s paintings address pictorial spaces designed to overcome normal language barriers, while provoking more uncertainty than they resolve.

Greg Ito (b. 1987, Los Angeles) earned a BFA in painting at the San Francisco Art Institute (2008). The artist has a forthcoming solo exhibition at Andrew Rafacz Gallery, Chicago, and is participating in the current exhibition Made in San Francisco, at Romer Young, San Francisco. Recent exhibitions include, SOOTHSAYER at Steve Turner, Los Angeles; Summer Fling:The Barn Show, Johannes Vogt, New York; and Over and Under, MON CHÉRI, Brussels in 2016; The Order of Shadowboxing, Et al., San Francisco and After Gruen at SADE, Los Angeles in 2015. Ito lives and works in Los Angeles.
